Federal Employee Track · Session I

When Health Affects Employment

Federal employees often deal with leave, FMLA, LWOP, medical restrictions, light duty, reasonable accommodation, OWCP, and disability retirement as separate issues. In reality, the same medical facts, job duties, leave history, and documentation may affect more than one option at once.

Still working but health is affecting performance
Using more leave than usual — sick, annual, or LWOP
FMLA has been used or is being considered
Doctor has issued work restrictions
Light duty or limited duty situation
Reasonable accommodation request pending or denied
OWCP claim filed or under consideration
Disability retirement under evaluation
Received a denial or considering reconsideration
Unsure which program applies

Federal Employee Track · Session Content

What this session covers

Federal Leave and FMLA

When leave protections apply and how to use them correctly.

LWOP

How Leave Without Pay affects service computation and retirement eligibility.

Medical Restrictions

What physician-issued restrictions mean and how agencies must respond.

Light Duty and Limited Duty

The difference between the two, and how each connects to other programs.

Reasonable Accommodation

What qualifies, how to document requests, and why the process matters.

OWCP

Workers' compensation benefits, forms, and long-term implications.

OPM Disability Retirement

Eligibility, application, documentation, and the SSDI offset.

Medical Documentation

Why documentation connects all of these programs from the beginning.

How One Decision May Affect Another

The same facts can matter across multiple benefit areas.

The Sequence

How these programs typically connect

1

Leave

Sick leave, annual leave, and leave sharing exhaust first.

2

FMLA

Job protection for up to 12 weeks — requires proper designation.

3

LWOP

Unpaid leave that affects service computation after 6 months per year.

4

Medical Restrictions

Formal physician restrictions that define what you can and cannot do.

5

Light Duty / Limited Duty

Temporary assignments based on restrictions — not the same as accommodation.

6

Reasonable Accommodation

A formal process under federal law — requires documentation and written agency response.

7

OWCP

Workers' compensation for work-related injuries — interacts with disability retirement.

8

Disability Retirement

OPM Disability Retirement when restrictions cannot be accommodated in any position.

Why the Connections Matter

How one program affects another

Federal employees often deal with these programs as separate issues. In reality, the same medical facts, job duties, leave history, restrictions, agency responses, and documentation may affect more than one option.

FMLAAttendance history
RestrictionsAccommodation eligibility
OWCPLimited duty assignment
LWOPRetirement timing and financial pressure
Accommodation historyDisability retirement documentation
Medical documentationAll of the above

What to Keep in Mind

What the rule says vs. what happens in practice

Federal employees may have protections under law, regulation, agency policy, or a collective bargaining agreement. But having a protection on paper does not always mean everything happens automatically, quickly, or correctly at the local level.

Having a protection on paper is not always the same as being protected in real time.

Requests, restrictions, leave usage, OWCP filings, accommodation issues, and disability retirement questions should be documented and handled carefully from the beginning.

Federal Employee Track · Private Intake

When private intake makes sense

If any of the following apply to your situation, a private intake allows Konexo to understand your specific circumstances before any consultation.

Repeated absences
FMLA or LWOP
Work restrictions
OWCP questions
Accommodation issues
Agency pressure
Disability retirement uncertainty
Denial or reconsideration

Understand the full picture before any decision is made.
